KTM announced its 2021 enduro range including three two-stroke models, two four-stroke off-road models, plus their two four-stroke dual sport versions. For 2021, KTM North America will offer the two-stroke WC-W models with its transfer port injection (TPI) system in 300, 250 and 150 displacements. The four-stroke XCF-W and their street-legal EXC-F versions will come in 500 and 350 displacements.

All seven models receive new graphics and an updated WP XPLOR fork with a new external preload adjuster. The 150 XC-W TPI also receives a new cast piston replacing the previous model’s forged piston, with KTM claiming improved durability without much weight gain.

Begin Press Release:

KTM’S 2021 ENDURO RANGE REACHES NEW HEIGHTS OF PERFORMANCE

Introducing a series of refinements and key touches to its advanced 2-stroke and 4-stroke model lineup for 2021, KTM has reinforced the best and most comprehensive Enduro range available in the market today.

For 2021, the combination of three 2-stroke models with the ground-breaking transfer port injection (TPI) system and four 4-strokes ensures that adult riders and racers of all ages and abilities will have the equipment to suit their needs, whether for competition or the ultimate play weapon on the toughest trails around the globe.

KTM’s expertise and experience gained from the WESS Enduro World Championship, including rounds at Red Bull Romaniacs and Red Bull Erzbergrodeo, among a range of other racing disciplines worldwide, permeate the evolving shape of KTM EXC-F and XC-W TPI technology. The 2021 KTM Enduro portfolio is set apart by its fresh and truly READY TO RACE graphic scheme and updated color palette, while the major enhancements for 2021 include changes to suspension components, as well as engine refinements.

The KTM 300 XC-W TPI is the leading 2-stroke in the line with an impressive power-to-weight ratio and supreme handling to thrill even the most demanding rider. 2021 marks the fourth year of KTM’s advanced and electronically controlled 2-stroke fuel injection system. Breathing new life into the 2-stroke engine, TPI extended the possibilities for performance, rider experience and the delivery of dependable power right into the rider’s fingers. The advantages are clear: there is no need for re-jetting for the climate, altitude or conditions. Automatic and electronically applied oil injection is another major asset.

As with all KTM EXC-F and XC-W TPI motorcycles in the 2021 ensemble, the KTM 300 XC-W TPI benefits from an additional external preload adjuster in the WP XPLOR front fork that allows for easy setting changes for varying track or trail conditions. Additionally, the ultra-lightweight KTM 150 XC-W TPI has been given a new piston, which brings increased performance, consistency and durability.

KTM refuses to kick down a gear in its mission to continue making the KTM EXC-F and XCF-W models the best dual-sport and offroad 4-stroke machines on the market. The 2021 KTM 500 EXC-F and 350 EXC-F models not only ensure their presence at the top of the dual-sport segment, but also make them serious consideration for any extreme offroad riders with high-quality WP XPLOR suspension, BREMBO brakes and an ultra-light chromoly steel frame.

Based on the same performance platform as the EXC-F models, the KTM 500 XCF-W and KTM 350 XCF-W machines make a definitive performance statement in the KTM 4-stroke Enduro line. With advanced Traction Control and Map selection activated with the touch of a button, controllable power is put to the ground in the most challenging terrain. As with all the models in the range, they also feature NEKEN handlebars, No-Dirt footpegs and CNC-milled hubs with GIANT rims fitted as standard equipment, encapsulating their READY TO RACE DNA.

Alongside the 2021 KTM Enduro models, dedicated lineups of KTM PowerWear and KTM PowerParts have been developed to deliver the highest levels of performance, protection and agility for both the rider and their motorcycle.

Bikes will be arriving in the summer. All details for each of the 2021 KTM EXC-F and XC-W TPI models will be available on www.ktm.com from June 22 onwards.

KTM has come to the rescue of GasGas, forming a joint venture with the Spanish off-road brand that will see it continue to produce motorcycles in Girona, Spain.

GasGas was having financial issues earlier this summer (it’s somewhat of a recurring motif for the brand, to be honest), taking measures to cut costs and improve cash flow. GasGas’ owner, Black Toro Capital, turned to KTM and worked out a deal that would ensure continued production of GasGas motorcycles as well as Torrot electric vehicles.

“(This news) represents a major step forward in our project to consolidate GASGAS as a world leaderof trial, it allows us to develop a new growth phase for GASGAS incorporating new models with cutting-edge technology with the best possible partner for the future of GASGAS,” says Ramón Betolaza, managing partner of Black Toro Capital.

Terms of the deal (which is still subject to the approval of antitrust authorities) were not released, though some outlets report KTM is taking on a 60% share of GasGas. In addition to existing models, the deal will see development on future trial and enduro bikes for GasGas. The new products will make use of KTM technology, similar to how Husqvarna shares tech with the Austrian brand.

Black Toro Capital says GasGas will be expanding its portfolio to different segments and engine displacements, with a focus on four-stroke engines and electric motorcycles and electric bicycles. GasGas currently produces two-stroke dirt bikes in 200cc, 250cc and 300cc displacements, and two-stroke trials bikes in 125cc, 250cc 280cc and 300cc sizes, plus the electric TXE trial bike (pictured at top) and a range of electric youth models.

For KTM, the arrangement achieves a couple of goals. First, it gives KTM a larger presence in Spain, including access to GasGas and Torrot’s production facilities in Girona. The deal could also add a third brand alongside KTM and Husqvarna. KTM will also be able to draw on the electric vehicle technology used by GasGas and its sister brands Torrot and electric scooter brand Muving.

KTM is already working on several electric motorcycle projects. In addition to the already in production Husqvarna EE5, KTM SX-E5 and Freeride E electrics, KTM has already confirmed plans for a lightweight Freeride Light for 2020 and an electric Husqvarna scooter for 2020/2021.

KTM is dominating the battle. In the championships around the world over the last 10 years, the Austrian brand has been the consistent performer in the fight for competition supremacy. Tony Cairoli’s ninth FIM Motocross World Championship title last season, as well as the first for the star of the show, the KTM 450 SX-F, was a true highlight. Pauls Jonass’ MX2 World Championship continued the orange brand’s dominance in the class with nine victories in 10 seasons for the KTM 250 SX-F, while the 2017 AMA 450 Supercross title was won in the hands of Ryan Dungey prior to his retirement. KTM has also enjoyed race wins in both the 250SX and 450SX classes this season with Shane McElrath, Jordon Smith and Marvin Musquin at the helm.

2019 KTM SX-F 450

To continue adding to these incredible achievements requires a strong motivation, a commitment to development for racing and investment in KTM’s talent development programs. This creates the best platform for the KTM SX range, as these world-winning technologies are tested in the heat of the battle prior to being available on serial production machinery. The KTM 50 SX, KTM 65 SX and KTM 85 SX sportminicycles provide a strong basis for juniors to step up to the adult ranks where the KTM 125 SX, KTM 150 SX and KTM 250 SX 2-strokes, along with the KTM 250 SX-F, KTM 350 SX-F and KTM 450 SX-F 4-stroke machines provide the sharpest weapon in each class.

Chassis

For model year 2019, all adult models receive a generation-changing update with KTM engineers targeting a further weight reduction that once again sets a clear benchmark in each class. In fact, in the higher capacity 450cc segment the KTM 450 SX-F is a lot lighter than its rivals. All SX models feature a re-worked frame for improved stiffness, handling and straight-line stability, a longer subframe, a revised rear axle slot and all-new bodywork for enhanced ergonomics with more freedom of movement. A brand-new appearance with new graphics compliment a newly-shaped seat and new fuel tank. A new air filter box offers improved protection of the air filter and better air flow with revised exhaust systems for both the 2-strokes and 4-strokes that contributes to a more efficient power delivery and improved performance.

2019 KTM SX-F 250

New radiators offer efficient cooling with improved positioning for mass centralization, while a stronger lithium ion battery for the E-starter is harmonious with the re-worked wiring harness for a compact electrical system. An updated triple clamp system for improved handling compliments new suspension settings, while a newly-developed, dual purpose, plug-in stand is yet another feature of the new range. All models continue to enjoy impressive serial components such as Brembo brakes, WP suspension, NEKEN handlebar, Dunlop tires, plus a map select switch with integrated traction control, launch control and map selection on the 4-stroke machines. This is no refinement model year, it’s an evolution; around 60% of each bike’s components are new.

Engine

All models in the KTM SX range have received major engine revisions over previous models. The KTM 250 SX-F and KTM 350 SX-F models enjoy a newly designed DS clutch, while all 4-strokes boast revised transmissions and a state-of-the-art Keihin engine management system with a reworked throttle body and improved electronics package. The KTM 125 SX, KTM 150 SX and KTM 250 SX all offer revised carburetor settings, with a new transmission and new clutch in each amongst other improvements. In addition to engine refinements on all models, the highlight KTM 450 SX-F model enjoys a newly developed SOHC cylinder head for reduced weight and improved mass centralization, a new camshaft with a shorter valve timing and improved surface along with a low-friction chain guide with a DLC coating.

2019 KTM SX 125

For those looking to intensify their ride and fine tune their machines to their own individual requirements, KTM has created a full range of aesthetical and performance parts available in its KTM PowerParts collection. Developed in parallel to the new SX generation from conception to production, and by some of the finest engineers in the world at KTM in conjunction with leading accessories manufacturers, this wide choice of products can certainly take each SX model to new heights. Not only that, the KTM PowerWear range provides a diverse catalog of READY TO RACE, high-quality products for those gearing up for the toughest of battles. With protective gear, riding wear and casual wear on offer, riders can look great both on and off the track.

“After the race is before the race. This is certainly a statement that we at KTM live by. Once again we enjoyed incredible success around the globe with our offroad teams last season, but this is a testament to all the hard work of those involved and especially to the R&D teams in both Mattighofen, Austria and the USA; racing success is part of the motivation that ensures we continue producing READY TO RACE serial machinery right out of the crate,” said Joachim Sauer, KTM Senior Product Manager Offroad.

2019 KTM SX 85

“A tireless strive to continue thinking and re-thinking on how we can develop our machines has led us to the next generation of KTM SX models that will soon be available on the market. There are some serious revisions over previous models with the KTM 450 SX-F a true highlight with its incredible handling thanks to its light weight and powerhouse engine. Our program to develop the next generation of raw talent is complimented by a full range of models from the KTM 50 SX to bikes capable of racing at Grand Prix level. Our goal is clear – setting the benchmark in motocross technology by creating the sharpest weapons for the job, for amateurs to the pros,” concluded Sauer.

KTM American Flat Track

Murrieta, California. (April 21, 2018) – Building upon its racing success in the off-road and motocross segments, as well as the continued commitment to American Road Racing at the junior level, KTM Motorsports is pleased to announce its plan to go racing in the 2019 American Flat Track Championship. KTM has appointed former HMC KTM Factory Superbike racer and Brand Ambassador Chris Fillmore as the new Flat Track and Road Racing Team Manager to oversee its racing efforts in the U.S.

American Flat Track is America’s original extreme sport. At its core, it’s a highly competitive, adrenaline-fueled motorsport featuring specialized motorcycles piloted by young world-class athletes. With history dating back to the first two-wheel racers in the 1920s, American Flat Track is widely regarded as the most prestigious and competitive form of dirt track motorcycle racing in the world.

John Hinz, President, KTM North America, Inc.: “We have been following the changes happening to the racing in American Flat Track and the excitement it’s produced, so as a READY TO RACE company it was natural for KTM to want to be involved. I am proud to continue a long-standing relationship with Chris Fillmore as the new Team Manager for our Flat Track and Road Racing efforts. Chris has a history with KTM beginning in 2003 when he rode on KTM’s first Super Moto team before leading our RC8R Sport Bike effort in Road Racing, and most recently setting the World record on a 1290 SUPER DUKE R at Pikes Peak. Chris has been working with the MotoAmerica RC Cup racers and is currently heading the Orange Brigade Road Racing Team with two young riders in the MotoAmerica Junior Cup, so we’re confident in his abilities to take on this exciting project.”

For 2019, KTM will field a race team to compete in the AFT Singles Class aboard the championship-proven 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION. The future is poised to bring even more excitement in the AFT Twins class with the upcoming 2019 KTM 790 DUKE.

Chris Fillmore: “It’s pretty exciting to work on this new project to go racing in the American Flat Track Championship. We have the full support of KTM’s global motorsports team with Pit Beirer, Roger DeCoster, Ian Harrison and the Austrian R&D department, which provides a wealth of knowledge and experience behind us. Our goal is to use 2019 as a building year to create our structure and race team in the AFT Singles Class and the 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION is a championship-proven race bike and the perfect platform for KTM to engage with the new American Flat Track series. We’re well aware that KTM’s new 790 DUKE has the perfect power plant to compete in the AFT Twins class and we’re excited to see what the future brings in this new journey.”

The 2018 American Flat Track Championship is underway with the first two rounds complete. KTM-mounted rider Dan Bromley has gotten off to a great start as he currently leads the AFT Single class on a privateer-backed KTM 450 SX-F. The following is from the American Motorcyclist Association, regarding the 2018 KTM AMA National Adventure Riding Series Schedule:

Adventure RidingPICKERINGTON, Ohio–Adventure motorcycle riding continues to command the attention of American motorcyclists with new models and new opportunities to explore the unknown from coast to coast. And the best rides and routes can be found on the KTM AMA National Adventure Riding Series 2018 schedule that the American Motorcyclist Association announced today.

AMA Recreational Riding Manager Heather Wilson said that the series has served a number of adventure motorcyclists since its inception in 2007, and is continuing that tradition for 2018.

“Many men and women are upgrading to larger, yet more versatile, bikes to be able explore highways and back roads,” Wilson said. “We are proud to provide AMA members with opportunities to get out and ride. And we appreciate KTM’s support for the series and the company’s commitment to the adventure riding segment.”

For 2018, the series is once again sponsored by KTM, which makes a full lineup of cutting-edge adventure bikes that can conquer anything the series has to offer.

Adventure Riding

“KTM is excited to return as a sponsor. We saw fantastic growth in the series in 2017,” said KTM Ride Orange Manager Mark Hyde. “Our staff had a great time meeting the riders at many of the national adventure rides this year and we have expanded our staff to support even more events next year.”

The 2018 KTM AMA National Adventure Riding Series schedule boasts 20 events throughout the country. Some longtime national adventure riding event organizers remain on the schedule, while other organizers who have been hosting adventure rides for many years have been added.

Returning this year is the KTM East Coast Adventure Rider Rally. The event is hosted by Pine Barrens Adventures LLC, and KTM will provide additional support.

KTM Ride Orange Event Specialist and eight-time AMA National Enduro Champion Mike Lafferty praised the event organizers who host these quality events.

“A lot of planning and physical labor go into hosting an event,” Lafferty said. “Without organizers like these, it wouldn’t be as easy for an adventure rider to find other motorcyclists who enjoy this style of riding or to find routes they may not think to travel on their own.”

The post 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition Unveiled: Third-Generation Orange Flash appeared first on Dirt Bikes.

KTM’s Factory Edition line of motocross bikes has been giving customers the unique opportunity to purchase a bona fide factory motocross bike since 2012, and today the company unveiled its latest generation, the 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition at its brand new supercross test track located right behind the company’s U.S. headquarters in Murrieta, California.

2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition
Ryan Dungey (left) and KTM North America president John Hinz unveiled the 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition during a worldwide press launch at the company’s new supercross test track near its Murrieta, California, headquarters.

John Hinz, President of KTM North America, and recently retired AMA Supercross Champion Ryan Dungey unveiled the new 450 SX-F Factory Edition to the global media during the event at KTM’s new supercross test track, which will be known as RD field in honor of both KTM Race Team Manager Roger DeCoster and multi-time AMA Supercross and Motocross champion Dungey.

“As a company, our brand promises ‘ready to race,’” Hinz said. “This isn’t just something that we talk about or a logo that we put on the wall on a banner. This is something we do every single day. We actually live it. This is who we are. We put our heart and soul into this motorcycle. It’s what we do. We want to give the best equipment to our riders, to our athletes, to our teams to go out and be successful and win championships.”

2018 KTM 450SX-F Factory Edition

Based on the production KTM 450 SX-F, the Factory Edition line concept actually began in 2010. Seven years later, KTM has become a dominant force in both AMA Supercross and AMA Motocross, winning three consecutive Monster Energy AMA Supercross Championships (2015, 2016 and 2017) and three Lucas Oil 450cc Pro Motocross Championships (2012, 2014 and 2015).

Each KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition bears the fruit of an extra-long development cycle. Whereas the production machines are introduced each June, the Factory Editions aren’t unveiled until December, affording KTM’s R&D and test teams every opportunity to further refine and develop them before they are released just prior to the start of the AMA Supercross season.

“We’ve redefined the development cycle of this product just for racing,” Hinz said.

2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition
KTM North America’s marketing manager, Tom Moen, walked the press through the 2018 KTM 450 SX-F’s changes and updates.

The 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition marks the third generation of the model, and it features significant changes when compared to the previous 450 SX-F Factory Edition, according to Tom Moen, Marketing Manager of KTM North America.

“We introduced our first generation KTM Factory Edition in 2011, and this was a huge step for our company,” Moen said. “We had a new chassis and handling, and a new single cam engine, and they brought the weight down. We worked hard the next couple years to refine that, and in 2015 we came out with the next-generation of the 450 Factory Edition, and it was a huge improvement, and it won three [AMA] supercross championships. We put into a lot of effort into the design and testing of the chassis, and we learned a lot about the frame. We also redesigned the motor and lost four pounds out of that motor, which was huge. They looked at every component of the motorcycle to bring the weight down even more. On this latest generation, we had a lot of goals, and one of them was the chassis and handling.”

2018 KTM 450SX-F Factory Edition

Moen said that the 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition boasts a lot of refinement over the 2017 KTM 450SX-F Factory Edition to improve the handling even more. The key goals were to optimize the chassis stiffness while also making the motorcycle more comfortable to ride.

2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition
The steering head area of the 450 SX-F Factory Edition’s chrome moly steel chassis has been beefed up to increase longitudinal stiffness between 7-10% without sacraficing comfort, according to KTM. A new aluminum triple clamp also increases front-end rigidity.

“Those are two words that any guy who works on suspensions and chassis knows do not go together,” Moen said. “On the previous generation, the chassis absorbed bumps really well, but we wanted it to be even more precise and more stable.”

To get there, KTM engineers redesigned the front portion of the Factory Edition frame from the steering head area of the frame down to the lower downtubes below the engine. The 2018 chassis is claimed to be 7-10% stiffer longitudinally in those areas because testing also revealed that the chassis loads can vary greatly during suspension compression. Stiffening the front helps to keep the chassis more torsionally rigid without sacrificing the great feel of the previous-generation chassis. To enhance that front triangle stiffness, the 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition also receives a stiffer aluminum triple clamp. The clamp offset is 22 millimeters. Out back, a 40 millimeter longer aluminum subframe adds to the chassis stiffness. While they were at it, KTM engineers also lowered the radiator positioning on the frame by 12 millimeters and stiffened the T section at the top of the radiators as well as changing both the upper and lower radiator tanks, which helps improve cooling while also moving the radiators closer to the frame.

“The result is that the motorcycle is more stable, but it’s also more comfortable to ride,” Moen said.

KTM didn’t leave the 449.cc SOHC four-stroke engine in the 2018 450 SX-F Factory Edition alone. The engine shaves another pound off the package while also being shorter for better mass centralization.

2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition
The Factory Edition’s 449.9cc, SOHC engine is 1-lb. lighter and smaller than the previous engine. The cylinder head has been lowered by 15mm. Also, note the new midpipe resonance chamber, which is part of a completely new exhaust system.

“On the motor, we actually lowered the cylinder head by 15mm, the cam is also 15mm lower, but the ports are still up, so we actually have a more direct intake port into the combustion chamber,” Moen said. “One design that we’ve always had is a single [upper] downtube that splits into a Y so we could have a straight exhaust port, but now it’s even straighter. This is kind of free horsepower that we’ve always had available.”

To capitalize on head and exhaust port changes, the 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition also receives a new exhaust system with a headpipe that exits the exhaust port in a much straighter fashion than the previous version, a new midpipe that hides the resonance chamber inside the pipe, and a much shorter muffler. The headpipe joint has also been repositioned to make it easy to remove the header without having to remove the shock absorber.

“The cam features the same intake and exhaust profiles, but the intake lobe on the cam is advanced two degrees,” Moen said. “We also worked a lot on [reducing] the friction on the cam and cam chain guides. We learned a lot about just what drags motor down and how much you can free it up. The whole goal with the motor was to make a lighter-feeling motorcycle without making power [that is] unrideable. We wanted to keep the torque characteristics, everything that we had, the same. We wanted to keep the motorcycle powerful, which we’ve always been able to do.”

2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition
The 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition exits the headpipe in a much straighter fashion than the previous version. Less restrictive exhaust flow equals more power.

To reduce drag inside the engine, the cam also gets a new, slicker surface treatment and rides on low-friction DLC rocker arms that bump open the Factory Edition’s titanium intake and exhaust valves.

2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition
A revision to the axle slots in the KTM’s aluminum swingarm allow increased wheelbase adjustability.

Other refinements to the 2018 KTM 450SX-F Factory Edition include new bodywork, including the gas tank, radiator shrouds and other bodywork.

“KTM has been working for the last three years, listening to all of our [KTM North America] requests and all of the riders’ requests,” Moen said. “We wanted to make every place that the rider touches, all of the contact points [feel] better, so that when you stand or you sit down you’re always in the perfect position. Any time you have more confidence, and it [the bike] is easier to ride, riders go faster.”

Another change is the incorporation of 5 millimeter longer rear wheel axle slots to give the 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition even more wheelbase adjustability. The Factory Edition also receives skid plate mounts on the chassis.

The chassis changes required alterations to the shock settings of the 450 SX-F Factory Edition. In addition to valving changes, the Factory Edition’s fully adjustable WP DCC shock also gets a new piston.

Other 2018 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition features include:
• Red Bull KTM Factory Racing graphics
• Triple clamps anodized in orange
• A Hinson factory clutch cover
• A Factory start [hold-down] for the fork
• A composite skid plate
• D.I.D Dirt Star rims
• A Factory seat with Selle Dalla Valle logo

KTM today announced its present and future plans in the emerging electric motorcycle market during a live-streamed press conference in Austria today while unveiling the 2018 KTM Freeride E-XC, and apparently there is a lot more to come in the segment that the company is calling “E-mobility.”

2018 KTM Freeride
The 2018 KTM Freeride E-XC is just the proverbial tip of the iceberg of KTM’s plans for the electric motorcycle market. PHOTO COURTESY OF KTM.

KTM says that it is the current leader in the electric motorcycle market, with 3000 units sold, giving it an 80 percent market share, and the company has already invested just under 20 million Euros in developing electric bikes, according to KTM CEO and Chairman Stefan Pierer.

“I am convinced that the electric mobility in the future takes place in the powered two-wheeler world,” Pierer said. “In that we have a clear focus and a clear strategy. We are developing motorcycles that will be from 250-400 Watts up to 15 Kilowatts.”

The timing to invest in electric motorcycles appears to be good for KTM, which expects to break a sales record in 2017. KTM sold 200,000 units in 2016.
“KTM’s success story is an ongoing one,” Pierer said. “We will have more than 1.5 billion Euro in sales. I am looking at more than 230,000 in unit sales. All in all, we keep the speed, and we want to become a real big global player.”

Executive Board Member and Head of Sales Hubert Trunkenpolz suggested that KTM and Husqvarna electric motorcycles can assist KTM’s growth plans in the burgeoning Asian motorcycle market.

“With our strategic alliance with Bajaj [of India], we are managing also to have a strong entry into the emerging markets in Asia and in Latin America,” Trunkenpolz said. “We expect double-digit growth in almost all regions where we are present. We will have sustainable growth in North America, in Latin America, in Europe, but the big growth driver for sure will be Asia in the next coming years. It’s a very, very dynamic market. We have been in China. We have been in Southeast Asia, and it is unbelievable how the motorcycle market is developing there.”

Gerald Kiska of Kiska Design, which is responsible for KTM brand development, added that KTM’s E-mobility strategy will give motorcycle customers another option to experience the brand.

“We are always driven by customer needs, and this is also, I think, our program for the future,” Kiska said. “With this technology we can fulfill wishes that cannot be fulfilled today. Therefore I think this opens up a complete new market. This is an opportunity that we have to use.”

That opportunity includes more models in the near future, and Kiska touched on them.

“Our next serial product will be a minibike for the kids,” Pierer said. “We will replace the 50cc mini with an E-SX, so two models in one that will replace the combustion two-stroke engine that we have in place at the moment. The very next one, then, is a product that will be a crossover between the bicycle and the motorcycle. We will come to the market next season with electric bicycles under the brand name Husqvarna.”

“It was our long-term strategy to step into the E-bike segment, but we didn’t have a plan to do it that quickly,” Pierer added. “A German-based, very experienced family bicycling business was looking for a new opportunity, and we took it immediately. In the next couple of years, for sure, we will do a lot in that segment.”

But for now, the 2018 KTM Freeride E-XC will remain KTM’s flagship motorcycle in the electric motorcycle segment. MSRP for the 2018 Freeride E-XC will be around 7500 Euros, not an outrageous price tag, but the difficulty with electric motorcycles remains the cost of the battery. KTM is well aware of that, and the company has developed a new strategy to make batteries more accessible to customers. According to Trunkenpolz, KTM is planning to offer a lease program for batteries and chargers. The cost will be less than 50 Euros per month, and it will allow customers to have access to the newest and most powerful batteries as they become available.

To debut the 2018 Freeride E-XC, KTM had multi-time FIM SuperEnduro World Champion and AMA EnduroCross Champion Taddy Blazusiak ride the bike down a series of ramps inside the hangar where the press conference was taking place. Blazusiak rolled silently onto the stage, and afterward he joked about it.
“It’s something very special for me to ride a motorcycle that nobody can hear,” Blazusiak said. “It’s very different. It’s still performing well, going fast, good brakes, like a dirtbike. You can ride it hard, but you can’t hear it.”

When asked what he thought about the idea of electric dirtbikes one day becoming a much larger portion of the dirtbike world, Blazusiak responded, “We went from two-strokes to four-strokes, and this is the future. I’m looking forward to it.”

FMF KTM 350 EXC-F Project Dual Sport https://www.dirtbikes.com/fmf-ktm-350-exc-f-project-dual-sport/ Tue, 22 Aug 2017 23:35:57 +0000 http://www.dirtbikes.com/?p=192881 With help from the aftermarket, Jay Clark Enterprises sharpens the already formidable talons of a KTM 350 EXC-F to turn it into a dual sport dynamo.

The post FMF KTM 350 EXC-F Project Dual Sport appeared first on Dirt Bikes.

]]>
The KTM line of four-stroke dual sport motorcycles is right at the top of the list in any given displacement category, but for riders looking to squeeze a bit more performance than the stock machine offers, custom dirtbike builder Jay Clark has come up with a recipe for success.

KTM
Jay Clark Enterprises worked its magic on a KTM 350 EXC-F and improved on the KTM’s fast, fun and user-friendly character. It wasn’t easy, though, because the stocker is so damn good.

As Clark, owner of Jay Clark Enterprises, admits, the KTM 350 EXC-F isn’t the easiest bike from which to pull huge gains, but only because the stock machine is so good already.

The KTM EXC line of bikes is simply amazing for dual sport usage, but we thought we would tinker with our 350 EXC-F to see just how good we could make it for the trails,” Clark said. “There really isn’t much that you have to do to a KTM 350 EXC-F because the bike already has plenty of power for the track or the trail.”

Unlike a lot of Clark’s projects, which feature a host of internal engine mods, this particular KTM doesn’t boast any internal changes such as a camshaft or piston swap. Instead, Clark focused on shaping the power from the outside. The first order of business was to remove the backfire screen in the KTM’s stock airbox, thus improving air flow into the engine. He also used a stock KTM two-stroke air filter cage, which further decreases air restriction in the stock airbox and allows the engine to produce a bit more low-end snap for a lively feel off the bottom. Air filtration is handled by a Uni Filter two-stage air filter. In the clutch department, Clark beefed things up by going with a Hinson Racing full inner hub and pressure plate kit, fiber plates, steel plates and springs along with an outer clutch cover kit.

KTM
With its new ignition, muffler and airbox mods, the KTM 350 is a bolder and much more fun version of the stock motorcycle. Low-end snap and a linear power delivery are hallmarks of its engine performance.

Even so, this KTM does sport two significant upgrades, one in the ignition department and the other with the exhaust. For the ignition, Clark went with a Vortex X10 ECU from Twisted Development, which allows the user to tailor the ignition spark timing and voltage output but also fuel mapping for more power. The X10 features 10 pre-programmed fuel and spark timing maps, but it features three additional switches to allow the dialing-in of the fuel curve at low, mid and high throttle openings. The X10 is a simple plug-and-play ECU, connecting directly into the standard KTM wiring harness to interface with all the standard engine sensors such as ECT (Engine Coolant Temperature), IAT (Intake Air Temperature), MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure), TPS (Throttle Position Sensor), CPS (Crank Position Sensor), so that it can automatically adjust fuel and spark timing for optimum power delivery in all weather, altitude and load conditions. When combined with the Vortex’s accessory software, the ECU can also be programmed to allow modification of several parameters, including rev limit, throttle enrichment and decay time, fuel timing, high resolution mapping, dwell time, voltage output and trim tables for cold starting, air intake temperature (IAT), engine coolant temperature (ECT), barometric pressure, battery voltage and more. With the additional software, the ECU can also log and graph data from these parameters in real time.

KTM
As its name implies, the FMF Racing 4.1 slip-pn muffler is good for a significant increase in horsepower. It’s the first thing we’d add to a stock KTM.

For the exhaust, Clark went with a tried-and-true part, FMF Racing’s slip-on Factory 4.1 RCT muffler/spark arrestor. We can vouch for the massive power gain of the FMF muffler since we recently slapped on a Husqvarna 501 test machine during our FMF Racing Factory 4.1 Dyno Test and were blown away by its performance. In fact, since it made 4.3 additional horsepower on that Husqvarna, it got us to thinking that maybe the 4.1 nomenclature in its model name is there for a reason. The Factory 4.1 RCT features FMF’s trademark Resonance Chamber Technology, which breeds a muffler core shape that alters the exhaust pressure wave for maximum power output while minimizing exhaust noise. The RCT is also shorter in overall length, which helps to tuck in better and be less susceptible to crash damage.

The only other noteworthy change to alter the power feel of the bike was a gearing change. Clark took a tooth off the countershaft sprocket, going from 14 teeth to 13 teeth to once again enhance the snappy feel at trailbike speeds. The 13/52 gearing and O-ring chain are from Supersprox.

DirtBikes.com test rider Nick Stover was on hand to swing a leg over our KTM project bike and give us his feedback. After busting around on the off-road trails inside Cahuilla Creek MX Park for the better part of two hours, Stover came back with a smile on his face.

“You can’t say anything bad about the KTM 350 EXC engine to start with, but the changes that are made are serious improvements,” Stover said. “It’s just awesome everywhere. The overall power delivery doesn’t feel any different than the stock bike except for feeling snappy right off the bottom. Otherwise it just feels like a stock bike with a lot more bark everywhere in the rev range. The 350 is such a fun engine, but this one takes that to the extreme, not because it feels any racier than before but because it’s just a lot easier to ride with the additional power on tap.”

KTM
Factory Connection dialed-in the KTM’s WP Xplor fork and PDS shock. Factory Connection isn’t well-known for its ability to improve the WP stuff. Maybe it should be.

While the KTM’s stock WP Xplor fork and PDS shock are also very competent, Clark went ahead and fiddled with the suspension anyway, enlisting a company that might be as synonymous with WP as others, Factory Connection.

“Factory Connection is known as the Honda suspension guys, but they really know how to do magic to the WP explore and PDS shock,” Clark said.

Factory Connection set up the KTM fork with .45 KG/mm springs and set the oil level at 100mm in the fork tubes. The low-speed rebound was set at 12 clicks out and the high-speed rebound was set at 10 clicks out. The fork height is set at 2mm above the top of the triple clamp. Out back, Factory Connection dialed-in the shock to balance with the fork.

With the mods, the KTM suspension is able to tackle whatever nasty terrain comes it way. Stover bounced through rocks and slithered through sand on Cahuilla’s off-road trails before heading out onto the motocross track to burn a few laps. Afterward, he gave the Factory Connection suspension upgrade high marks.

KTM
Just like the stock version, our modified KTM 350 EXC-F is deceptively fast, possessing linear but potent power throughout the rev range.

“It’s really controlled,” Stover said of the suspension action. “It’s clearly set up more for trail riding than moto. On the track, it was a little on the soft side, but it was still pretty good. Out on the trail, though, it’s really plush, especially in low-speed stuff. It doesn’t deflect or bounce around at all. They [Factory Connection] did a good job on it.”

KTM
IMS Products’ 2.6-gallon fuel tank gives the KTM additional fuel range while the Moto Seat seat cover and DeCal Works graphics give the 350 a factory racebike appearance. The orange frame guards are KTM Hard Parts items.

The rest of the KTM is modified with a host of parts from the aftermarket companies that partner with Clark on his builds. For more range, Clark added an IMS Products fuel tank that swells fuel capacity to 2.6 gallons. Cycra Racing supplied a complete new plastic kit along with its Full Armor skid plate and Ultra Pro-Bend full wrap-around hand guards. For added protection on the lower frame and to keep the machine looking new, Clark also went with a set of KTM Hard Parts orange frame guards.

Even more protection comes from various suppliers. Bullet Proof Designs’s radiator braces and rear swingarm guard protect vital components from being thrashed by bushes and rocks while a TM Designworks chain guide is stronger than the stock chain guide.

The stock wheels have also been replaced by a host of Tusk Off-Road’s durable and relatively economical wheel sets wrapped in Dunlop AT-81 tires. The stock KTM brakes are held in place via a Tusk brake bolt kit, with the rear disc receiving added protection from a Tusk shark fin brake rotor guard. A Tusk sprocket bolt kit is also used. The only other Tusk item is a lightweight Lithium-ion battery that saves weight while also supplying plenty of juice for the KTM electric starter.

To provide better ergonomics, the stock handlebars are replaced by Renthal 604 Fat Bars and Tacky grips. On the throttle side, a Motion Pro Titan throttle tube also does away with the stock KTM part. Down low, Scar Racing titanium footpegs shave weight and provide an aggressive tooth pattern for better boot traction when riding.

Of course, throwing all of these cool parts on a bike with OEM graphics wouldn’t do much to deliver the message that this KTM is a cut above a stocker, so Clark called on DeCal Works to wrap the 350 E-XCF with a Semi-Custom graphics kit and pre-printed number plate backgrounds. Topping it all off is a Custom Cool seat cover from the folks at Moto Seat.
