Who Makes GasGas Motorcycles?

GasGas Motorcycles is a Spanish motorcycle manufacturer with a long history in the industry. The company has built a reputation for producing high-quality off-road and trials motorcycles that are used by enthusiasts and professionals around the world. In this article, we will take a closer look at the history of GasGas Motorcycles, its parent company, and its motorcycle lineup.

History of GasGas Motorcycles
GasGas Motorcycles was founded in 1985 in Girona, Spain, by Narcis Casas and Josep Pibernat. The company began as a small workshop that specialized in producing trials motorcycles. However, it quickly gained a reputation for quality and innovation and began expanding its product range.

In 2019, GasGas was acquired by Pierer Mobility AG, the parent company of KTM and Husqvarna. This acquisition has allowed GasGas to benefit from KTM’s advanced technology and production facilities while retaining its own distinct brand identity.

GasGas Motorcycle Lineup
GasGas Motorcycles produces a range of off-road and trials motorcycles, including enduro, motocross, and cross-country models. Their current lineup includes:

EC Series: The EC Series is GasGas’s range of enduro motorcycles, available in 200cc, 250cc, 300cc, and 450cc versions.
MC Series: The MC Series is GasGas’s range of motocross bikes, available in 65cc, 85cc, 125cc, 250cc, and 450cc versions.
TXT Series: The TXT Series is GasGas’s range of trials bikes, available in 125cc, 250cc, and 300cc versions.
XC Series: The XC Series is GasGas’s range of cross-country bikes, available in 250cc and 300cc versions.
All GasGas motorcycles are designed and manufactured in Spain, with a focus on performance, durability, and innovation.

GasGas Engine Manufacturing
GasGas Motorcycles designs and develops its own engines in-house. The company has a team of experienced engineers who work on engine design and development, ensuring that GasGas motorcycles offer the highest level of performance and reliability.

GasGas Parent Company
As mentioned earlier, GasGas was acquired by Pierer Mobility AG in 2019. Pierer Mobility AG is a leading European manufacturer of motorcycles and related products. The company owns several well-known brands, including KTM and Husqvarna, and has a strong reputation for innovation and quality.

In conclusion, GasGas Motorcycles is a Spanish manufacturer that has built a strong reputation for producing high-quality off-road and trials motorcycles. With a range of models designed for different disciplines, GasGas offers something for riders of all levels. As part of Pierer Mobility AG, GasGas is well-positioned to continue growing and innovating in the years ahead.

KTM has come to the rescue of GasGas, forming a joint venture with the Spanish off-road brand that will see it continue to produce motorcycles in Girona, Spain.

GasGas was having financial issues earlier this summer (it’s somewhat of a recurring motif for the brand, to be honest), taking measures to cut costs and improve cash flow. GasGas’ owner, Black Toro Capital, turned to KTM and worked out a deal that would ensure continued production of GasGas motorcycles as well as Torrot electric vehicles.

“(This news) represents a major step forward in our project to consolidate GASGAS as a world leaderof trial, it allows us to develop a new growth phase for GASGAS incorporating new models with cutting-edge technology with the best possible partner for the future of GASGAS,” says Ramón Betolaza, managing partner of Black Toro Capital.

Terms of the deal (which is still subject to the approval of antitrust authorities) were not released, though some outlets report KTM is taking on a 60% share of GasGas. In addition to existing models, the deal will see development on future trial and enduro bikes for GasGas. The new products will make use of KTM technology, similar to how Husqvarna shares tech with the Austrian brand.

Black Toro Capital says GasGas will be expanding its portfolio to different segments and engine displacements, with a focus on four-stroke engines and electric motorcycles and electric bicycles. GasGas currently produces two-stroke dirt bikes in 200cc, 250cc and 300cc displacements, and two-stroke trials bikes in 125cc, 250cc 280cc and 300cc sizes, plus the electric TXE trial bike (pictured at top) and a range of electric youth models.

For KTM, the arrangement achieves a couple of goals. First, it gives KTM a larger presence in Spain, including access to GasGas and Torrot’s production facilities in Girona. The deal could also add a third brand alongside KTM and Husqvarna. KTM will also be able to draw on the electric vehicle technology used by GasGas and its sister brands Torrot and electric scooter brand Muving.

KTM is already working on several electric motorcycle projects. In addition to the already in production Husqvarna EE5, KTM SX-E5 and Freeride E electrics, KTM has already confirmed plans for a lightweight Freeride Light for 2020 and an electric Husqvarna scooter for 2020/2021.

The Gas Gas Enduro GP 250 and Enduro GP 300 models are exacting replicas of the company’s factory race team off-roaad racers ridden by Gas Gas factory riders Jonathan Barragán and Antoine Basset. A clear cut above Gas Gas’ greatly improved standard production EC 250 and EC 300 production models (we tested the 2018 Gas Gas EC 300 and XC 300 with their new chassis and KYB suspension components, and found them to be vast improvements over previous versions), the Enduro GP models boast a bunch of special parts, including:

Torrot and Gas Gas have launched a joint project to facilitate access and training for off-road riders with their electric motorcycles for children. The dirtbike riding school for promising young riders now has 14 partner training centers, a teaching offer that is to increase over the next few months. In addition to the values of sport and competition, children participating in our schools will learn to respect the natural environment thanks to our 100% electric motorcycles.

The future of trial and enduro is in the hands of the next generation, and as in many other sports, ensuring the health of our sport means the creation of a steady supply of young riders. Aware of this reality, Torrot and Gas Gas have jointly launched the creation of the Torrot Kids School and the Gas Gas School of Champions, an ambitious dirtbike riding school / training project that already has many centers distributed throughout the national territory, and now also internationally. The aim is to draw the youngest riders and their families into the world of two wheels in a professional, safe and controlled environment.

The two projects, Torrot Kids School and the Gas Gas School of Champions, share the same basic ideals; the training of boys and girls in the world of two wheels. Although the truth is that the riders who are more focused on competition will feel more comfortable in the Gas Gas School of Champions, while those who prefer to learn, improve and enjoy the world of the motorcycle in a more relaxed and sustainable way, will find in the Torrot Kids School their ideal space.

Gas Gas TXTe EGD Wins Inaugural TrialE Cup https://www.dirtbikes.com/gas-gas-txte-egd/ Thu, 17 Aug 2017 16:07:31 +0000 http://www.dirtbikes.com/?p=192018 Marc Colomer rides the Gas Gas TXTe EGD electric trials bike to victory in the very first TrialE Cup. Is a production version of the machine on the horizon?

Gas Gas has not let off the throttle since its purchase by Spanish electric vehicle maker Torrot, and the Gas Gas TXTe EGD is proof of that.

TXTe
Former World Trials Champion Marc Colomer came out of retirement to give the Gas Gas TXTe EGD electric-powered trials concept bike a win in the inaugural TrialE Cup. Will we see a production version of the machine in the near future? PHOTOS COURTESY OF GAS GAS.

Infused with new capital, the company has labored feverishly to update its line of off-road and trials motorcycles, such as the 2018 Gas Gas EC 300 and XC 300 two-strokes, with great results. But the TXTe EGD might represent the pinnacle of the company’s current effort to innovate, and it’s already a champion.

Piloted by multi-time FIM World Trials Champion Marc Colomer, the TXTe EGD recently won the inaugural TrialE Cup for electric-powered trials bikes. Although still a concept machine, the TXTe EGD’s success so early in its development has Gas Gas seriously looking at producing the model for sale on the future.

TXTe

Born out of Gas Gas’ adoption by Torrot, competition bikes, the TXTe EGD was first unveiled at the 2016 EICMA motorcycle show in Milan Italy. The machine is propelled by a liquid-cooled electric motor that is claimed to produce 18 kilowatts of power and 20 Newton-meters of torque. But the real secret to the TXTe EGD’s performance, according to Gas Gas, lies in its speed controller, allows for a level of control not possible even with electronically fuel-injected internal combustion engines. Juice is supplied by a Lithium-ion battery rated at 1500 Watt-hours. Gas Gas claims that when fully charged, the TXTe EGD can run for approximately 90 minutes. Unlike most electric motorcycles currently on the market, the TXTe EGD features a full six-speed transmission and hydraulic clutch, same as the company’s petrol burners.

The motor and transmission are housed in a chrome-moly tubular steel chassis with a 51.9-inch wheelbase. Out back, an aluminum swingarm that features Gas Gas’ rising-rate linkage rear suspension is controlled by a Reiger shock absorber that offers adjustable spring preload and rebound damping. Rear suspension travel is 6.8 inches. Up front, a fully adjustable 39mm fork delivers 7 inches of suspension travel. The TXTe EGD is claimed to weigh a mere 145.2 lbs.

TXTe

The TXTe EGD rides on standard trials wheels with a Michelin Trial X11 2.75″ x 21″” front tire and am X11 Trial 4.00″ x 18″ rear tire. Braking is handled by a 185mm NG wave disc clamped by a Braketec monobloc four-piston caliper. The NG rear brake disc measures 150mm and is clamped by a Braktec two-piston caliper.

Guided along in its development by none other than Colomer, the Gas Gas TXTe EGD has already proven itself to be a winner in his hands. Time will tell if a production version of the innovative machine will ever fall into ours.

The now defunct Oldsmobile automobile company used to have a marketing slogan designed to inject some excitement into the brand: “This is not your father’s Oldsmobile.” After swinging a leg over the 2018 Gas Gas 250 EC and 250 XC on a warm, sunny day today in Southern California, we might suggest a similar one for the reborn Spanish motorcycle company: “No se trata de Gas Gas de su padre!”

Gas Gas
The 2018 Gas Gas EC 300 (shown here) and the 2018 Gas Gas 300 XC are leaps and bounds ahead of the 2017 models. PHOTO BY ADAM BOOTH.

Because it sure as hell ain’t.

Spared from certain death after being purchased by Spanish electric motorcycle manufacturer Torrot with help from investment firm Black Toro Capital in November 2015, Gas Gas began a complete revamp of its trials and off-road motorcycle line immediately thereafter, and the 2018 off-road models are proof positive that Torrot is serious about building the Gas Gas brand into a major contender for 300cc two-stroke off-road supremacy. You can read up on all of the technical changes made to the 2018 Gas Gas 300 models here. The short answer is that both bikes are virtually identical in spec., the EC 300 is the Enduro model, equipped with lights and an enduro computer, and the XC 300 is the cross country version, which means no lights, no computer and a little less in the way of electrical gear. Gas Gas has yet set the MSRP for either the 300 EC or the 300 XC, we expect both to come in under $9000.

Gas Gas
Thanks to an all-new backbone-style chassis, the Gas Gas 300 XC (shown) and XC retain their quick steering and stability while feeling lighter than previous, perimeter-framed versions. PHOTO BY SCOTT ROUSSEAU.

Our all-too-brief time with the new 300 EC and 300 XC took place at Motoventures.com’s Dirt First Rider Education Center in Anza, California. Run by industry veteran Gary LaPlante, the 350-acre facility is an outdoor classroom for new and experienced riders alike, offering a smorgasbord of fun trails that are used to teach trials and off-road riders how to become better trials and off-road riders. Gas Gas also had a star-studded cast on-hand to debut both of its new 300 models, including former factory Yamaha motocross and supercross start Damon Bradshaw, 1993 AMSOIL GNCC Champion Fred Andrews, 1994 AMA National Enduro Champion and six-time ISDE gold medalist Steve Hatch, and 10-time AMA National Trials Champion Geoff Aaron, the latter laying out a nice single-track course throughout the Dirt First facility for us to test the performance of both the EC and the XC.

Gas Gas motorcycles have always been known for having stout engines, but the bigger news for 2018 is that the EC and the XC share an all-new chassis and suspension. Gone is rigid perimeter frame of previous generations, and in its place is a Chrome-Moly backbone/double cradle design that bears a striking resemblance to KTM’s two-stroke off-road chassis. Likewise, a genuine KYB fork and shock do away with the recalcitrant mish-mash of components that included a Marzocchi fork and Reiger shock.

Gas Gas

Gas GasThat’s the first thing we noticed when hustling the EC 250 around the loop. Even without a proper setup—our 2018 test units were so new that we were literally breaking them in as we rode them—the difference in the Gas Gas’ ability to soak up small ripples and large G-outs when compared to the previous suspension was dramatic. The 48mm closed-cartridge, spring fork, which features the compression damping adjusters at the top of the fork legs and the rebound damping adjusters at the bottom of the fork legs, was initially stiff, but it only took a few miles to begin to work in concert with the fully adjustable KYB piggyback shock out back, delivering 11.8 inches of plush yet controlled ride at both ends while we were making our way around the test loop.

Gas Gas
Gas Gas has done away with the funky suspension brands for 2018 and spec’d both the EC and the XC with a KYB fork and shock. ¡Viva la diferencia

Gas GasAnd the new chassis feels so much lighter and slimmer than the 2017 version that you almost can’t believe that both generations were made by the same company. Gas Gas claims that the new chassis is 20 percent lighter, and it feels like it. Its reduction in torsional stiffness makes the EC and XC a whole lot more forgiving while retaining the lightning-quick steering of previous Gas Gas models. The new chassis is mated with an aluminum subframe that’s 15 percent lighter and a new swingarm design—Gas Gas officials tell us it’s the first new swingarm in 10 years—that is seven percent lighter. The swingarm also receives a new chain tensioner system that is claimed to make chain adjustment easier.

Although our test loop was tight, it’s clear that the 2018 chassis’s quick and light-steering character doesn’t come at the expense of stability. The 300s track straight and true over bumpy ground, and they feel light and flickable when taking to the air. They’re night-and-day better than the 2017 models.

Gas Gas
Both Gas Gas models deliver excellent stability in open terrain. PHOTO BY ADAM BOOTH.

And about that engine: Power delivery has been improved via a number of changes, including a new crankshaft, a new cylinder and cylinder head. A Keihin PWK 38mm carburetor feeds the Gas Gas-recommended 50:1 fuel mix through VForce reeds into the cylinder. The carb has no throttle position sensor, and yet throttle response is very good. We noticed that the XC model in particular felt a little fat right off idle even though the air screw was turned all the way out, but the power cleans up nicely as soon as the engine builds a few revs—and again the bikes were practically right out of the crate. The spent fuel charge exits the exhaust port and blows through a double-walled expansion chamber on the EC and a Gas Gas-spec FMF unit on the XC; that is the only difference in the tuning specs between the two models. Both are silenced by an FMF Powercore 2.1 muffler. Interestingly, the ECs in our test group were also fitted with spark arrestors, but Gas Gas tells us that neither the EC nor the XC will be equipped with a spark arrestor when they leave the dealerships.

Gas Gas
Boasting great throttle response, the Gas Gas 300cc two-stroke engine is big on tractability. The simplest way to explain the difference between the two models is that the EC offers a little more grip and the XC offers a little more zip. PHOTO BY SCOTT ROUSSEAU.

Gas GasThe pipe and spark arrestor combo definitely made a noteworthy difference in the power delivery on the EC when compared to the XC. Both engines can chug along at trials bike speeds, but our test EC felt a whole lot more linear than the XC. Both will pull with authority, but the XC does so with a lot more snap throughout the rev range. The EC simply feels smoother and tends to work better on tighter and more technical trails, especially for novice riders, whereas the XC is clearly going to be better in wide open spaces and/or for more aggressive riders. Either way, tractabilityb is the strong suit of the Gas Gas 300 engine.

Both models feature six-speed transmissions that are fed power through a Magura hydraulic-assisted clutch. The clutch pull is smooth and linear. However, veteran motojournalist Adam Booth, a DirtBikes.com hired gun for the day, noticed that there is a slight gap between second and third gear, and we got a tip from none other than Bradshaw, who has come out of retirement to contest the AMSOIL GNCC Series, that he adds four-teeth to the rear sprocket of his race bike to tighten up the gearing. Still, with the Gas Gas’ engine’s flexible power delivery, we’d have to say that the stock gearing works pretty well overall.

For 2018, Gas Gas has switched to NG discs front and rear while retaining the Nissin calipers and master cylinders. The 260mm front and 220mm rear binders do an excellent job of slowing the EC and XC’s roll without being grabby or wooden in feel. Nice.

If we have to gripe about anything, it’s that the 90/90-21 front and 140/80-18 Metzeler Six Days tires are simply not a good choice for the silty, dry conditions that are the norm in Southern California. The tires imparted a vague feel, and front end traction was a hard to come by in the sand. If we owned a 2018 Gas Gas, these tires would get the heave ho immediately.

Ergonomically speaking, the EC and XC are very comfortable motorcycles, with a slim layout, a comfortable gripper-style seat and footpegs that offer a stable platform for the rider’s boots. Booth mentioned that he prefers the bend of the handlebars on the XC over the bend on the EC.

Of course, electric starting is one of the nicest features of the Gas Gas two-strokes. There’s still a kickstarter in place as a back-up, but the Lithium-ion battery-powered starter fires up the bike with ease. Other nice details include a new fuel tank that boasts a larger capacity—2.6 gallons—thanks to the redesigned chassis, and a new airbox layout that allows the air filter to be serviced from the side rather than forcing the rider to remove the seat to do it.

With its new chassis and suspension, the Gas Gas EC 300 is a solid contender for top honors in the 300cc Enduro class. PHOTO BY SCOTT ROUSSEAU.

At the end of our short test day, we couldn’t help but be impressed with the 2018 Gas Gas EC 300 and XC 300. The redesigned models deliver all of the great attributes of previous models with greatly improved chassis and none of the suspension issues thanks to the KYB components. We’d love to pit both against competitive models in their class. We expect both to be in the hunt for top honors in their respective categories.

The investment that Torrot Group in late 2015 is beginning to show as Gas Gas announced today its line of 2018 Gas Gas EC Enduro and XC Cross Country motorcycles. According to company info, everything is new or significantly updgraded, including the engine, chassis and chassis geometry, suspension and a host of other parts.

2018 Gas Gas
Gas Gas has completely revamped its 2018 250 EC (shown) and 300 EC Enduro models as well as its 250/300 XC models for 2018.

The EX/XC models are available in 250cc and 300cc displacements, and all models come with electric starting as a standard feature. Gas Gas engineers worked to improve the engine performance of the two-stroke engines by incorporating a new crankshaft, a new cylinder and cylinder head while also adding a redesigned cylinder head stay that is claimed to reduce the engine vibration felt at the handlebars. Carburetion is via a Keihin PWK 38mm carburetor, and all EX/XC models feature an exhaust system with an FMF Powercore 2.1 muffler designed exclusively for Gas Gas. The XC and “Factory” models are also fitted with a new FMF exhaust pipe. Even with their increased power, both the 250s and 300s are compliant with Euro 4 emissions regulations.

In addition to increased performance, the new EC/XC models boast increased reliability via a redesigned cooling system that features more efficient radiators and a new filling cap location and left side air bleed. The radiator grilles are also new, boasting better airflow into the radiators for more effective cooling. Gas Gas also improved the clutch lubrication system for the EC/XC’s Magura hydraulically activated clutch, which feeds power to a six-speed transmission on all models.

2018 Gas GasThe 2018 Gas Gas EC/XC models feature an all-new backbone-style Chrome-Moly steel chassis that has been re-tuned to reduce torsional stiffness for better handling and more steering lock for sharper turning than the previous chassis. It’s also 20 percent lighter than the previous chassis, according to Gas Gas. The 2018 EC/XC aluminum subframe has also been redesigned to reduce its component weight by 15 percent while also allowing easy access to the air filter housed inside a larger volume airbox than what was found on 2017 Gas Gas models.

The 2018 Gas Gas EC/XC suspension is via KYB, with a 48mm closed-cartridge, spring fork that features the compression damping adjusters at the top of the fork legs and the rebound damping adjusters at the bottom of the fork legs. Out back, a KYB piggyback shock with high- and low-speed compression and rebound controls is connected to an all-new seven-percent lighter swingarm via a new rotary axis, tie-rod and rocker with anti-swivel linkage. The swingarm also features a new chain tensioner system that allows for easier chain adjustments.

Other quality components include Excel wheels, Metzeler Six Days tires, Nissin brake calipers and cylinders and clamping NG 260mm front and 220mm rear discs.
